From Times Staff Reports
A man brandished a hand grenade in a bank Friday, demanded money and then ran off with it, leaving the grenade behind, police said.
The robbery occurred about 5 p.m. at the First Federal Bank of California at Pacific Coast Highway and Aviation Boulevard, said police Sgt. Paul Wolcott.
The robber ran into an adjacent building, where a dye pack concealed with the cash exploded, Wolcott said. The man abandoned the money and fled.
A bomb squad determined the grenade was inert.
