The Rudest Player? It Shouldn’t Matter

Regarding Lacy J. Banks of the Chicago Sun-Times [Morning Briefing, April 24] not voting for Kevin Garnett for MVP because Garnett is rude to the media (meaning that he refused an interview with Banks):
By all means, let’s not forget that the MVP is not really about performance on the court, but about how willing an athlete is to flatter the egos of journalists. Revealingly, Banks judges Garnett’s character by one criterion: his willingness to do interviews. If we want to bring in extra-athletic criteria, why not charity work? Or how nice an athlete is to his or her mother?
Kevin Garnett owes me, as a fan, nothing but an all-out performance on the court. In particular, he does not owe me five minutes of “Yes, we came to play” after the game, or worse, during the game. Too many people, especially those who work in the media, seem to have forgotten this.
