Kenny Rogers became the oldest Texas Ranger pitcher to throw a shutout since Nolan Ryan in 1991 and the Rangers cruised to a 9-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Monday night at Arlington, Texas.
Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run homer, and David Dellucci and Michael Young each had three-run shots in the first as the American League West leaders won their eighth in a row at home.
The 39-year-old Rogers (4-1) gave up four hits, struck out four, walked one and helped protect his eighth career shutout when he made a lunging grab of a line drive by Rocco Baldelli with runners at first and second to end the third inning.
Ryan was 44 when he pitched his last shutout on June 11, 1991. The victory was Rogers’ 105th with the Rangers, moving him ahead of Bobby Witt for second place in team history behind Charlie Hough’s 139.
Chicago 5, Baltimore 4 -- Scott Schoeneweis pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and the surging White Sox scored three runs in the seventh inning to hold off the Orioles at Baltimore.
Cleveland 2, Boston 1 -- Jake Westbrook (2-1) pitched six shutout innings and Victor Martinez hit a two-run homer off Curt Schilling to lead the Indians to victory at Cleveland.
Kansas City 3, Toronto 2 -- Aaron Guiel homered in the 10th inning to lift the Royals to victory at Toronto.
