The West Coast premiere of Nicholas Wright’s “Vincent in Brixton” has replaced Warren Leight’s “James and Annie” in the Aug. 20-Sept. 19 slot at the Pasadena Playhouse. Wright’s play, about Vincent Van Gogh’s brief stint as an art dealer in London, won the 2003 Olivier Award for best play and was nominated for a Tony Award.
Artistic director Sheldon Epps released a statement about the “extraordinary opportunity” to present Wright’s play and said “James and Annie” is being postponed, although no later date was announced. He was not available for additional comment.
Laguna Playhouse had announced that it would stage the West Coast premiere of “Vincent in Brixton,” opening Jan. 1, but has canceled that production. Laguna officials were not available for comment. Another production of Wright’s play is scheduled at San Diego’s Old Globe next year.
Pasadena Playhouse has also added the premiere of “Why Do Fools Fall in Love?” to its 2004 season, running Oct. 15-Nov. 14. The musical is based on the 1998 screenplay by Tina Andrews about doo-wop singer Frankie Lymon.
