Update -- Chicago State of the Mid-Continent Conference has three starters back from a team that had a school-best 9-7 league record and was 10th on the NCAA list of most-improved teams (3-27 in 2002-03). However, guard Craig Franklin, the Cougars’ leading returning scorer, must sit out the first five games for academic reasons. Guard Tony Weeden, a 6-2 senior guard (13.6 ppg) and 7-1 sophomore center Deji Akindele, who had a school-record 62 blocked shots last year, are expected to lead the way. Like UCLA’s Ben Howland, Chicago State Coach Kevin Jones is beginning his second season. Jones’ son, Kevin Jones Jr., is expected to start at guard. Howland-coached teams have won their last five season openers.
