A Peruvian-born physicist was named the new director of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia.
The appointment of Piermaria Oddone, 60, was announced by the 90-member consortium of universities that manages the lab for the U.S. Department of Energy.
Oddone, a U.S. citizen, has been deputy director of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California since 1989. He’ll take over the Fermilab job July 1, replacing Michael Witherell.
Fermi is a high-energy physics lab where collisions of subatomic particles are used to study the building blocks of matter and energy.
