San Bernardino County Deputy Hit, Killed

A San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy was killed Wednesday in Rancho Cucamonga after a driver ran a red light and hit his motorcycle, authorities said.
Deputy Ron Ibes, 43, of Upland died at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton after the 2:30 p.m. collision, said Robin Haynal, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.

Deputy sheriff -- An article in the Sept. 2 California section misspelled the name of Ron Ives, a San Bernardino County sheriff’s deputy who was killed in a traffic accident, as Ron Ibes.
The driver also was taken to the hospital and was in critical condition.
Ibes, an eight-year veteran of the department, was traveling east on Baseline Road and had just entered the intersection at Archibald Avenue when he was hit by an SUV headed south on Archibald, police said.
“The light was red,” said Ed Moreno, 54, a motorist who witnessed the crash.
“I started to slow down, and the guy in the Explorer [proceeded].
“The Explorer tried to dodge the cop, but he got him anyway,” Moreno said.
After striking the motorcycle, the SUV flipped and collided with several other vehicles in the opposite lane, authorities said.
The driver’s name was not released.
Ibes, who was based at the Rancho Cucamonga station, was married and had a 20-year-old son, Haynal said.
