Bowden’s Grandson and Former In-Law Killed

A grandson and a former son-in-law of Florida State football Coach Bobby Bowden were killed when their car was hit a by a utility truck that was helping to restore power outages caused by Hurricane Frances in Quincy, Fla.
John Allen Madden, a 45-year-old former Florida State lineman who played for Bowden, and his 15-year-old son, Bowden Madden, were killed instantly Sunday when the passenger side of their car hit the front of the truck, Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Robert Mills said Monday.
“Most of us have been around all of the Bowden family a great deal, and it is a loss shared by all of us,” Florida State Athletic Director Dave Hart said in a statement. “Words can’t express the grieving I know the Bowdens are going through.”
The driver of the truck was not injured.
John Madden and Bowden’s daughter Ginger divorced in January after 22 years of marriage.

Manchester United goalkeeper Tim Howard has been released from the U.S. national team ahead of Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier against Panama in Panama City.
Howard, who played in the United States’ 2-0 victory against El Salvador in a CONCACAF Group A qualifier on Saturday, has returned to England, U.S. officials said during the team’s training session Monday.
Kasey Keller, who plays for Tottenham in England, is the probable starter with MetroStar goalkeeper Jonny Walker serving as backup.
Diego Maradona received permission from a judge to return to Cuba and resume drug rehabilitation.
The Argentine soccer great was expected to travel to Cuba with his father, a sister and personal physician for treatment at a Havana mental hospital, said Hector Leguizamon, a member of Maradona’s legal team.
Graeme Souness is quitting Blackburn to become coach of Newcastle United, the two clubs announced. Souness would replace Bobby Robson, who was fired Aug. 30 after Newcastle was winless in its first four games this season.

Mikko Eloranta tipped a shot past Olaf Kolzig with 3 minutes 22 seconds left, lifting Finland to a 2-1 win over Germany and into the semifinals of the World Cup of Hockey at Helsinki, Finland.
Finland, which finished atop the European pool after tying Sweden 4-4 in their round-robin finale, will play the winner of tonight’s quarterfinal game involving the defending champion United States and Russia at St. Paul, Minn.

Veteran center Dikembe Mutombo said he had agreed to a trade that would send him from the Chicago Bulls to the Houston Rockets for three players.
“It is where I have wanted to be all along,” Mutombo told the Houston Chronicle.
Mutombo told the newspaper that he agreed to the deal involving Eric Piatkowski, Adrian Griffin and Mike Wilks on Friday.
Rocket General Manager Carroll Dawson said that the deal hadn’t been finalized.

Passings
Alphonso Ford, the leading scorer in Mississippi Valley State basketball history, has died of leukemia. He was 31.
Ford died Friday at a hospital in Memphis, Tenn., less than two weeks after announcing his retirement. Ford played 11 games for the Philadelphia 76ers in 1993-94 but made his mark in Europe on teams in Turkey, Greece and Italy.
Harvie Ward, a two-time U.S. Amateur champion and a top teaching pro whose clients included the late Payne Stewart, has died after a long illness.
Ward died Saturday night at his home in Pinehurst, N.C. He was 78.
