Weir Takes Three-Shot Lead at Canadian Open

The only birdie putt Mike Weir made Saturday in the Canadian Open at Oakville came at a good time, a six-footer on the 18th hole that gave him a three-shot lead and left him in great shape to become the first Canadian in 50 years to win his national championship.

Without that putt for a one-under 70, Weir might have felt he let a great round get away.

Vijay Singh took a triple bogey on No. 11 for the second time in the tournament but recovered to make six birdies and finish with a 72.

Jesper Parnevik hit his opening tee shot so far right he never found it, but he finished with a 71.

Weir goes into the final round at 10-under 203, leading by three shots over Singh, Parnevik and Cliff Kresge, who had a 67.

Annika Sorenstam took a three-stroke lead into the final round of the John Q. Hammons Hotel Classic at Broken Arrow, Okla., shooting a three-under 68.

Sorenstam, making her first LPGA Tour start since the British Open in late July, is at eight-under 134.

Joanne Morley is second after a 67. Johanna Head (69), Karen Stupples (70) and Shi Hyun Ahn (73) were five strokes back. Second-round leader Christina Kim (75) was another shot behind.

Doug Tewell shook off a bogey on the first hole and shot a seven-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Des Smyth after two rounds of the Kroger Classic at Maineville, Ohio.

Tewell, the runner-up last year, is at 13-under 131. Smyth shot a 67. He is two shots ahead of first-round co-leader Gary McCord (69).
