From Times Wire Reports
With a thunderclap of explosives, the containment dome of the Maine Yankee nuclear power plant toppled to the ground in one of the final steps of the facility’s decommissioning.
Hundreds of people gathered in Wiscasset to watch the blast, the first time explosives have been used to knock down a commercial reactor containment building, officials said.
The 150-foot-high structure was the most visible symbol of the 900-megawatt plant during its 24 years of operation.
