A’s Win Behind Redman

Mark Redman continued his run of success on the road, pitching 6 2/3 solid innings, and Eric Chavez and Erubiel Durazo each drove in runs to lead the Oakland Athletics over the host Seattle Mariners, 2-1, Sunday.

Redman (11-12) had lost his two previous starts, both in Oakland, where he’s 3-6 with a 7.81 earned-run average in 14 starts. He improved his road record to 8-6 with a 2.88 ERA in 16 starts.

Octavio Dotel pitched the ninth inning for his 22nd save.

First-place Oakland won two of three against Seattle to move three games ahead of the Angels in the American League West.

Minnesota 5, Baltimore 1 -- Johan Santana struck out a career-high 14 in eight shutout innings, extending his scoreless streak to 30 innings, to lift the Twins at Minneapolis.

By winning his 12th consecutive decision, Santana (19-6) tied a team record set by Scott Erickson in 1991 and matched by Brad Radke in 1997.

The Twins could clinch their third AL Central title in a row with a victory today at Chicago.

Toronto 9, Tampa Bay 7 -- Vernon Wells homered in a five-run third inning for host Toronto, which moved two games behind the fourth-place Devil Rays in the AL East.

Tampa Bay is trying to avoid a last-place finish for the first time in its seven-year history.

Cleveland 8, Kansas City 3 -- Ben Broussard’s three-run homer capped a five-run third inning at Cleveland, and the Indians averted a three-game sweep.

Kansas City has not swept a team since winning three in a row against Texas from Aug. 26-28, 2003, a span of 57 series.

Chicago 6, Detroit 1 -- Paul Konerko and Carlos Lee homered, and Freddy Garcia (12-11) pitched a shutout into the eighth inning at Chicago.
