Was Live 8 Worth It?
Hats off to the musicians of Live 8 for bringing the world’s attention to the poor and needy, and especially for confronting the Group of 8 countries on this issue. However, what good does it do, even if the rich nations forgive all the debts and double or triple their aid to poor countries, while their wealth is actually built on the poverty of the people they exploit? Their exploitation, hidden behind banners of “free enterprise,” “free trade,” “democracy,” “entrepreneurship,” “economic development” etc., is nothing but a relentless machine to make the poor poorer and the rich richer.
