Re “Times Editor Announces Retirement,” July 21
L.A. Times Editor John Carroll has done a magnificent job reviving this paper. His remarkable journalistic signature will be missed and yet I was thrilled to read that his successor will be Dean Baquet.
Let’s hope the Tribune Co. will give Baquet a generous enough budget to get out that hard-hitting, tough reporting that The Times is capable of producing. As a corporate entity, the Tribune Co. must make a profit, but money isn’t everything -- good, solid, prestigious and honest journalism should be factored in as well.

Carroll will be missed. What a great track record of improvements and success. And a genuine gentleman to boot!
