Security Council OKs More Troops for Haiti

From Times Wire Reports

The U.N. Security Council voted unanimously to add more than 1,000 soldiers and police to the peacekeeping mission in Haiti ahead of elections in October.

A resolution adopted by the 15-nation body also extended the operation’s mandate to Feb. 15, “with the intention to renew for further periods.”

Specifically, the council approved U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s proposal to temporarily dispatch 750 troops for a rapid-reaction force in and around the capital, Port-au-Prince. An additional 50 military personnel would be added to coordinate operations at headquarters. The resolution also provided 275 civilian police in the run-up to elections.
