A second-year deputy with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was killed Wednesday when his patrol car rolled several times off Highway 247, authorities said.
Greg Gariepy, 39, was driving along a curve when the vehicle left the highway and overturned, the San Bernardino County coroner said. Sheriff’s spokeswoman Robin Haynal said there was no indication Gariepy was pursuing a vehicle. Gariepy died at 5:54 a.m. at Hi-Desert Medical Center in Joshua Tree.
Gariepy’s death while on patrol is the first in the department since Deputy Ron Ives was killed in September 2004. A driver ran a red light in Rancho Cucamonga and struck Ives on his patrol motorcycle.
