Former Police Chief to Seek Presidency

Iran’s former chief of police, Mohammed Baqer Qalibaf, registered as a candidate in the nation’s June 17 presidential vote.
Qalibaf, 43, is a moderate conservative who may be the strongest challenger to former President Hashemi Rafsanjani, who is making a new bid for the job. Qalibaf is expected to win support from young voters.
During Qalibaf’s term as police chief, fewer people were arrested for having satellite TV dishes or attending mixed-sex parties -- both against the law.
