Former Tyco Executives Check In to State Prison

L. Dennis Kozlowski and Mark Swartz, the former Tyco International executives convicted of improperly obtaining $600 million at the expense of shareholders, entered New York state’s prison system Thursday to serve their sentences.
The two arrived by bus at Downstate Correctional Facility in Fishkill, N.Y. -- one of three reception centers where male inmates stay for several weeks while being evaluated and waiting to be assigned to a prison. Kozlowski and Swartz had been held temporarily at Rikers Island, a New York City jail, after being sentenced Monday to 8 1/3 to 25 years in prison.
At Downstate, the men were given short haircuts, shaves and identification cards, said Linda Foglia of the state Department of Correctional Services. They also received prison clothing, including green winter coats, green socks, green trousers, black work shoes, green short-sleeved shirts, sneakers, white long-sleeved shirts, white handkerchiefs and underwear.
Because of their high-profile cases, Foglia said, they will be housed in a 36-cell protective-custody unit. Each 90-square-foot cell in the unit holds a bed, sink, toilet and writing desk.
Kozlowski, 58, and Swartz, 45, were convicted in June of grand larceny, falsifying business records and other charges.
