CHP Officer Dies After a Car Hits His Motorcycle

A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer stopped at a red light in Industry died Friday after he was struck by a car, authorities said.
Officer David Romero, 47, married and the father of five, had been with the CHP for 23 years, 20 as motorcycle officer, said CHP Officer Tomiekia Johnson.
She said Romero, who was assigned to the Santa Fe Springs office, was stopped at the light at the intersection of Turnbull Canyon Road and Valley Boulevard shortly before 10 a.m. when his motorcycle was rear-ended by a car, which was then broadsided by another vehicle.
“The officer noticed a blue vehicle coming up behind him [at] apparently high speed,” CHP Officer Edmund Zorilla told KCAL Channel 9. “He turned on his emergency lights to the rear and motioned with his hands for the driver to slow down. The driver made no attempt to slow down and subsequently rear-ended his motorcycle, propelling both the motorcycle and the vehicle, and the officer, into the intersection.”
Romero was airlifted to County-USC Medical Center but was pronounced dead on arrival at 10:44 a.m., according to CHP Officer Ron Burch.
The incident remains under investigation.
