SUNDAY
It’s “Super Bowl XLVII.” San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and his brother John, coach of the Baltimore Ravens, could settle the whole thing themselves by kicking field goals, say best of five, but where would be the fun in that? (CBS, 3:25 p.m.)
Sure, the Super Bowl’s halftime show will feature Beyoncé’s reunion with Destiny’s Child … but “Puppy Bowl IX” has puppies! And kitties! Canines and felines cavort on a mini-grid iron in this super-cute bit of counterprogramming. (Animal Planet, 5 p.m.)
MONDAY
In his new documentary “Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God,” Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney (“Taxi to the Dark Side”) probes the child sexual abuse scandal that continues to rock the Catholic Church. (HBO, 9 p.m.)
Monday nights just haven’t been the same since “House” went off the air last year. If you’ve been missing your weekly dose of medical mysteries and doctor drama, there’s the new series “Monday Mornings.” With Alfred Molina, above. (TNT, 10 p.m.)
TUESDAY
Have you heard the term “hate-watching,” where you stick with a show just because you find it disappointing and/or aggravating? Well, the musical drama “Smash” is back for a sophomore season … and we’re not exactly sure we want it to improve. (NBC, 9 p.m.)
WEDNESDAY
Why did the chicken cross the road? I say, I say, to get as far away from “Fried Chicken Paradise” as possible before his “cluck” ran out. It’s a joke, son! See how the popular poultry dish is prepared at eateries around the country in this special. (Travel, 11 p.m.)
THURSDAY
Is it Oct. 19 already? Fans of “Community” know what we’re talkin’ about. The college-set sitcom finally returns, crawling ever closer to six seasons and a you-know-what. With Alison Brie, below, and that monkey from “Animal Practice.” (NBC, 8 p.m.)
FRIDAY
When last we left “Touch,” Martin (Kiefer Sutherland) and his math-prodigy son had joined forces with a woman (Mario Bello) desperate to locate her similarly gifted daughter. Reconnect with the drama when it returns for Season 2. (Fox, 8 p.m.)
SATURDAY
You sank my “Battleship.” Or perhaps it was the “Independence Day” meets “Transformers” meets “Waterworld” trailer that doomed this board game-based 2012 nonblockbuster. With Taylor Kitsch, Liam Neeson and Rihanna. (HBO, 8 p.m.)
