STANFORD INVITATIONAL
Senior Fitsum Tesfa of Chino Hills Don Lugo, running 15:10 for 5,000 meters, won the boys’ Division I sweepstakes race at the Stanford Invitational beating junior A.J. Acosta of Oceanside El Camino and Brandon Bethke of Lake Forest El Toro. Acosta was timed in 15:13 and Bethke clocked 15:14. Simi Valley Royal just edged Portland Jesuit, 111 to 121.
Murrieta Valley won the girls’ Division I team title defeating Portlant Jesuit, 77 to 111. Samantha Gaffney of Salt Lake City Judge was the individual winner in 18:04. Reno, paced by sophomore Marie Lawerence’s winning time of 17:28, took the team title in the Division II race with 87. If you combined all 128 teams that competed in one mythical race, Murrieta Valley would have had 282 points; Division III winner South Lake Tahoe, 303 and Reno 359.

Brandon Bethke of El Toro won the three-mile race in a course-record time of 15:32 for El Toro at Laguna Niguel Regional Park. Simon Cherrie (15:44) and McHale Walde (15:46) finished second and third for Mission Viejo, which also got a fifth-place finish by Ricky Pena (16:12). The Diablos were without regular No. 4 runner Drew Balmer, who has been bothered by a sore hip.

Leslie Meade of El Toro was the top individual with a winning time of 19:15 but Mission Viejo had three of the top five finishers to claim the dual meet at Laguna Niguel Regional Park. Mission Viejo’s Alyssa Brown finished second at 19:41 while Amanda Carlucci was fourth at 19:53 and Barbara Caplan finished fifth at 20:24.

Sophomore Alphonso Ayala from Diamond Ranch finished fourth in 16:19 and Alfred Hernandez came in fifth in 16:21 for Don Lugo.
