The death of a 16-year-old girl found at the base of a dam in southern San Diego County has been ruled a suicide by the county medical examiner.
The ruling came after an autopsy by the medical examiner and an investigation by the Sheriff’s Department into the girl’s disappearance from the family home in Chula Vista.
Reyna Carolina Genel was reported missing by her family on Monday. Hours later, her badly injured body was found at the base of the Upper Otay Lakes Dam. She was airlifted by helicopter to Scripps Mercy Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Graffiti scrawled on the dam suggest the site is a common gathering place for teenagers. It is a 75-foot drop from the top of the dam to the base.
The medical examiner said the cause of death was blunt impact injuries to the head.
