Car hits two people, driver arrested

An alleged drunk driver crashed into two people who were setting off fireworks in Costa Mesa just before 9 p.m. Friday, police said.

Authorities did not immediately release any information on the identity of the two victims but said a woman’s car hit them while they were in the middle of Wilson Street near Canyon Drive.

“They bent over to light a firework and they were struck by a vehicle,” said Sgt. Patrick Wessel.

The extent of the victims injuries was also unavailable, but Wessel said one of them suffered a broken leg.

Emergency crews transported both of them to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.

Police arrested the driver, 51-year-old Jana Lynn Swauger of Lake Forest, on suspicion of felony driving under the influence, Wessel said.

Swauger, who works as a nurse, is being held in Orange County Jail in lieu of $200,000 bail, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department records.
