IRVINE - Estancia High’s wrestling forces had some big moments at
the University High 12-way tournament Saturday, keyed by the performances
of Jeremy Valdes, Nathan Thaler and Deven Bowling.
Valdes, a senior and 18 today, gave himself an early birthday present
with a 5-0 run, all by way of pins, to claim the tournament’s Most
Valuable wrestler honor in the lower weights. A 135-pounder, he improved
to 18-4.
Thaler was also 5-0 with four pins and a technical fall in the
215-pound category, improving to 23-3.
A third Eagle to post a 5-0 record was heavyweight Bowling, whose five
pins pushed his overall record to 13-3.
Also with solid performances for the Eagles were sophomores Peter Diep
(112), Victor Carmon (125) and Louis Valdes (103), each finishing fourth
in their categories.
