Girls basketball: Tars defeated, 37-30

NEWPORT BEACH - The Newport Harbor High girls basketball team used
a 14-5 run the first seven minutes of the final quarter to cut visiting
Aliso Niguel’s lead five, but the Wolverines held on for a 37-30 Sea View
League triumph Tuesday.
Freshman Jillianne Whitfield and junior Evita Castillo shared scoring
honors for the Sailors with 11 points apiece, while Castillo added 14
rebounds.
Sophomore Lindsay Woller chipped in nine rebounds and sophomore Athena
Vasquez added four points for the Tars, who fell to 2-17, 0-4 in league.
Aliso, paced by sophomore Julia Pederson’s 17 points, improved to
16-5, 1-3.
Coach Glenn Albios’ Sailors return to Sea View play Thursday against
visiting Irvine, before hosting Back Bay rival Corona del Mar Saturday in
a nonleague clash.
