Prep swimming: Newport sweeps Monarchs

NEWPORT BEACH - The Newport Harbor High boys and girls swim teams

handled visiting Mater Dei Tuesday to claim nonleague victories.

The Sailors boys won, 103-62, while the girls prevailed, 107-63.

Sophomores Andrew Cole and Nathan Weiner, as well as junior Jonathan

Huang were standouts for the Harbor boys.

Cole won the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.32) and the 200 individual

medley (2:10.76) and was also on the victorious 200 medley relay team.

Weiner (100 free) and Huang (100 backstroke), added contributions to

both freestyle relay wins to their individual event triumphs.

The Harbor boys improve to 2-2, while Mater Dei falls to 0-5.

Junior Carly Geehr and sophomore Mai Tajima each won two events and

were on two relays to help the Sailors girls team improve to 3-1 and drop

Mater Dei to 5-1.

Geehr topped the field in the 200 IM (2:09.21) and the 500 free

(5:09.44), while Tajima won the 200 free (2:05.10) and the 100 backstroke

(1:02.07.

Erin Ball (100 free) and Jennifer Arrow (100 breaststroke) also won

individual events and contributed to one winning relay apiece.

Newport will compete in the Foothill Games beginning with Thursday’s

prelims, before returning to Sea View League action April 4 against

Woodbridge at Heritage Park.
