CORONA DEL MAR - Pacific Coast League champion Northwood finished
league play with a 10-0 record Wednesday as the Timberwolves claimed a
3-1 victory over CIF Playoffs-bound Corona del Mar on the latter’s field.
Northwood struck for three runs in the first two innings, then was
held in check by junior Melanie Cole, a right-hander who teased the
Timberwolves with slow stuff en route to a complete game five-hitter.
It was her first appearance in the circle after spending the season in
the outfield.
A coin flip for the No. 2 and 3 spots heading into CIF looms for
Corona del Mar and Costa Mesa, both with 7-3 record.
CdM scored in the seventh inning when Lauren Loe hit a one-out single
and advanced when Allysa Zoelle was hit by a pitch. Meaghan Bunney
followed with a run-scoring single, but CdM was unable to take advantage
of runners on second and third with one out, and dropped to 10-9 overall.
Northwood is 17-5.
