Boston hospital surgeon will speak at library

Atul Gawande, chief surgical resident at Women’s Hospital in

Boston, will speak at the Newport Beach Public Library at 5:30 p.m.

today about his book, “Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on an

Imperfect Science.”

Gawande’s book was a finalist for the National Book Award and was

selected by the New York Times as one of the “Best Books of 2002.”

Gawande is also a research fellow at the Harvard University School

of Public Health and a staff writer for The New Yorker magazine.

The Newport Beach Public Library Foundation sponsors the free

St. Andrew’s pastor will receive service award

John A. Huffman, pastor of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in

Newport Beach, will receive The Others Award from The Salvation Army

of Orange County for his community service.

Huffman has been pastor of the 4,500-member church since 1978. He

has traveled worldwide meeting with leaders in fields ranging from

business to world relief. He has written nine books and his printed

sermons are mailed to 4,000 people in 50 states and 30 nations.

Huffman will receive the award at the annual Spirit Awards Civic

Dinner on May 22 at the Hyatt Regency Irvine.

Fashion Island candy store to host fund-raiser

A Fashion Island candy shop will collect candy-filled baskets

during a Thursday fund-raiser to benefit children of Marines

stationed in Iraq.

From 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., California Candy Creations will collect the

baskets. This weekend, store owner Jamie Whitlock will bring the

donations to Camp Pendleton with Danny Bonaduce, who co-hosts a

morning show on STAR-FM (98.7).
