Corona del Mar clinches share of PCL title

Corona del Mar High’s baseball team hit back-to-back home runs in the

bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Northwood, 6-5, on Friday and

clinch at least a share of the Pacific Coast League title.

The victory assured the Sea Kings the top seed heading into the

CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Keith Long led off the seventh with a single and Josh Bradbury

followed with a two-run blast to tie the score at 5-5. Nick Karpe hit

a solo shot to win the game.

Long finished the game 3 for 4, with two doubles. Barrett Sprowl

added an RBI single in third inning for Corona del Mar (15-8, 10-3 in

league.)

Blake Contant came in to relieve Todd Macklin in the sixth and

earned the victory to improve to 5-2.

UCI stuns Titans

* BASEBALL: UC Irvine upset No. 4 Cal State Fullerton with a 5-3

road win in Big West Conference baseball action Friday night.

The Anteaters (20-30, 8-8 in conference) took advantage of the

Titans’ four errors and they also collected 11 hits. Brett Smith

improved his pitching record to 8-3, as he struck out nine and

allowed eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. It was Fullerton’s first loss at

home this year.

Gordan, Barnett double

* TRACK AND FIELD: Sophomore Laura Gordan of Sage Hill School won

the girls 300 hurdles (51.0) and triple jump (33 feet, 6 3/4

inches), while junior Braden Barnett captured the boys shot put

(44-5) and discus (123-3 1/2) for the Lightning in the Academy

League track and field finals Friday at Saddleback College.

In the shot put, Barnett broke his own league record of 43-0 set

last week. “He has gotten progressively better every meet,” said Sage

Hill Coach Nate Miller, whose athletes advanced to the CIF Southern

Section Division IV preliminaries May 17 at Mt. SAC.

Other Lightning league finalists were freshman Kelsey Rose (fifth

in the girls 200 in 27.7 and sixth in the high jump at 4-2), freshman

Tim Lefler (sixth in the boys 1,600 at 5:04.6 and seventh in the 800

at 2:17.1) and sophomore Kevin Emamian (eight in the 100 at 12.1 and

eighth in the long jump at 16-7).

Saddleback sweeps Mesa

* VOLLEYBALL: The Costa Mesa High boys volleyball team completed

its season with a 15-1, 15-12, 15-12 loss to Golden West League

visitor Saddleback Friday.

Senior Danny Krikorian had six kills for the Mustangs, who finish

2-16, 1-11 in league.

Mesa Coach Dave Sorrells praised the play of sophomore middle

blockers Garrett Walthers and Gabriel Gonzalez.

Errors cost Sailors

* BASEBALL: Host Woodbridge scored the winning run in the bottom

of the seventh inning on a Newport Harbor throwing error to cap a

late rally as the Warriors edged the Sailors, 4-3, in a Sea View

League game at Windrow Park.

Ryan Rowe hit a two-out, solo home run in the sixth to give

Newport (8-16, 3-10 in league) a 3-0 lead, but Woodbridge scored

three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie it, two coming on an

outfield error. Newport’s Joey Cantarella was the hard-luck loser,

while teammate R.J. Muller went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Panthers handle Eagles

* BASEBALL: The Estancia High baseball team outhit Orange, 6-5,

but walked 11 and hit two Panther batters to drop a 10-6 Golden West League road baseball decision Friday.

Jeremy Hauser went 2 for 4 with an RBI double and Matt Ronquillo

was 2 for 4 with two RBIs to pace the Eagles (3-19, 1-9 in league).

Orange (12-9, 7-3) clinched a CIF Southern Section playoff spot

with the victory.
