INSIDE CITY HALL

ALARM SYSTEM UPGRADE

The police department will soon get a new alarm-monitoring system

to help officers respond to calls from the 4,905 homes and 1,359

businesses in the city. The council approved the $130,000 upgrade on

Tuesday without discussion on the heels of last month’s study session

on matter.

WHAT IT MEANS

The new system will improve the city’s ability to monitor the

alarms, improve the city’s tracking of false alarms and improve

revenue potential of the service.

PARK NAMES

Anyone who wants to name a city park after a Rosalind Williams or

Chuck Jones must kiss that dream goodbye. The council approved an

ordinance to prohibit naming city parks after people. The idea is

that there are just too many notable residents and not enough parks

and other significant structures to go around.

WHAT IT MEANS

City-owned facilities that are operated by outside agencies, such

as the Balboa Theatre, will still have the option of naming the

theater after a large donor. The Mariners Park Library will still

bear the name of Donna and John Crean, who donated half a million

dollars for it. But no city parks can be named this way.

SEWER CAM VAN

The purchase of a new $127,000 camera-equipped van will actually

provide substantial savings over three years as city staff can

perform a service that has in the past been done mainly by

contractors. The camera system will allow the city to monitor sewer

lines to prevent leaks.
