Newport hangs on against CdM, 2-1

Jake Kalwitz scored two first-half goals for Newport Beach’s boys
under-16 soccer team as it hung on to defeat Corona del Mar, 2-1, in
AYSO Region 97 soccer action Sept. 13. Patrick Vlahakis and David
Garrett had assists on Kalwitz’s goals.
Tommy Olson had more than 10 saves in goal for Newport and was
supported by sweeper Jeremy Lewis and defenders Phil Garrett, Nick
Normandin and Justin Whisler. Edgar Torres and Sergio Rodriguez
played forward while P.J. Baca, Chris Lewis and Junior Rubio moved
the ball through the midfield.
In boys under-12 action:
* Typhoons 4, Blackjacks 2:
Brian Baca and Jake Manning each scored two goals for the Typhoons
in the two-goal victory. Manning scored his in the first half, one
assisted by Austin Mahaffey. Tobin Frome assisted Baca in the second
half.
Hayden Cornwell and Emil Peterson provided strong defense in the
second half with goalkeeper Cameron Conway also giving strong play.
Fisher Robison, Alexander Allione, Zac Chocek, John Klobe and
Cooper Scott added consistent play.
In girls under-10 play:
* Fighting Pickles 3, Red Hot Chili Peppers 1:
Madison Grant scored three times with assists from Kaili Brande
and Alise Larson. Delaney Bell, Madison Kohlenberger and Paisley
Muller provided strong defense and Hannah Nance protected the goal.
* Flames 2, Highlighters 1:
The Flames remained undefeated with the victory. Katty Ayala
scored the first goal in the first minute of the game and Holly Kelly
followed with one of her own.
Other offensive efforts were provided by Rachel Gray, Kelsey Long,
Dylan Alexander, Megan Bathen and Jane Layton.
Erika Wolf was strong in goal with help on defense from Rachel
Jennings, Sara Bradbury and Sydney Alexander.
* Rattlers 6, Pussy Cats 0:
Jordyn Alessi and Delaney McCardle each scored twice to lead the
Rattlers with singles goals from Julia Cordes and Ricki Archie.
Kaitlyn Cosenza, Victoria Meer, Sara Vetrovec, Mary Ahearn and
Kasey Thompson all had key assists and showed strong defense.
* Blue Crush 3, Purple Panthers 2:
Madison Wooters notched the hat trick as the Blue Crush earned the
victory after being tied, 2-2.
Erin Hinkleman and Alex Kehoe added the assists with help from
midfielders Allison Schelin, Andrea Ocampo and Taylor Harrison.
Gretchen Tingler, Kimbe Cadarette, Caroline Graham, Brittany
Stump, Danielle Harrison and Tiara Landrigan all played strong
defense.
In boys under-10 action:
* Silver Wolves 3, Green Grenades 1:
Caleb Candelaria scored two second-half goals to spur the Silver
Wolves to victory.
Robert Boullon began the scoring for the Silver Wolves before the
Green Grenades tied it, 1-1.
Casey Shearer and Clay Smyth supported the midfield while Eli
Gomez and Cody Lippman also controlled play.
Candelaria and Wyatt Muller played strong defense along with
goalkeeper Jacob Swain. Efe Atli and Jason Wooding provided strong
play as well.
