Powers ignites victory

Jeff Powers, a former UC Irvine All-American, scored four goals to

help the U.S. men’s national water polo team defeat Cuba, 13-6, at

the FINA World Championships in Montreal Wednesday.

Team USA’s Tony Azevedo led all scorers with five goals.

Ryan Bailey, another former Anteater standout, scored once while

UCI product Rick Merlo did not score in 12 minutes of action.

Goalie Brandon Brooks had six saves for the Americans.

The U.S. (2-0) plays Serbia and Montenegro, also 2-0, in group

play Friday.

Capitals edge Newport

* TENNIS: The host Sacramento Capitals stretched their lead to 1

1/2 matches in the Western Conference with a 22-21 World Team Tennis

victory Tuesday night.

The Capitals (9-3) won the final two matches by 5-3 counts to

edge the Breakers (7-4).

Newport victories came in men’s singles (Ramon Delgado), women’s

doubles (Katerina Bondarenko and Anastassia Rodionova) and mixed

doubles (Delgado and Rodionova).
