The Newport Harbor Baseball Association Pony All-Star team bowed out
of the District tournament Tuesday night, losing to Los Alamitos,
10-0, at the Los Alamitos Pony Baseball Field.
Newport Harbor was held hitless through five innings before play
was stopped by virtue of the mercy rule.
“We actually played real well,” Newport Harbor Manager Chris Hone
said. “When you run into a kid who throws a no-hitter, it’s hard to
win a game.”
The two teams were playing for third place and Orange County’s
final berth in the section tournament.
Los Alamitos’ starting pitcher surrendered only two walks and
recorded eight of his 15 outs by strikeout.
“It was a great season, and this doesn’t dampen it one bit,” Hone
said. “We lost to probably the best team in Orange County.”
Hone expressed surprise that Los Alamitos was even in the
third-place game to begin with, acknowledging that they were the
initial favorite to win the tournament.
La Mirada was the eventual champion after defeating Corona del
Mar, 9-2, later Tuesday night.
Catcher Matt Sarvack was a defensive standout for Newport Harbor,
recording three assists.
“Matt played great behind the plate to throw out three kids,” Hone
said.
