TERRY ALBRITTON

A former world record holder in the shot put, he died of unknown causes in Cambodia on Sept. 1. He was 50.

He earned mythic status at Newport Harbor High, starting for three seasons on the varsity football team and winning the CIF Southern Section shot put title in 1971 and ’72.

Some believe he is the best athlete Newport Harbor has ever produced.

He broke the world shot put record with a heave of 71 feet, 8 1/2 inches at an all-comers meet in Hawaii in 1976.

He competed in track and field at the University of Hawaii and Stanford. He is a member of the Stanford Athletic Hall of Fame.

GEORGE ARCHER

The inaugural Toshiba Senior Classic champion died Sept. 25 of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He was 65.

His Toshiba victory came at Mesa Verde Country Club and contributed to more than $10 million in career prize winnings.

He won 12 PGA Tour events, including the 1969 Masters.

BUBBA KAPKO

A former Newport-Mesa Dream Team performer as a fullback and linebacker for the Estancia High football team, he died in a car accident in Colorado on Aug. 28. He was 19.

An estimated 850 attended a local memorial service for him and the inaugural Bubba Kapko Memorial golf tournament raised an estimated $8,500 for the Estancia Athletic Boosters and the Bubba Kapko Memorial fund.
