Taylor, Stokke lead Sailors

MOORPARK ? Senior Bo Taylor qualified first in the discus throw and second in the shot put to highlight Newport Harbor High competitors Saturday at the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries at Moorpark High.

Taylor broke the meet record in the discus with a toss of 199 feet, 10 inches, well off his personal record of 208-5 1/2 .

His mark in the shot put (61-10) was a personal best by six inches, easily allowing him to advance to next Saturday’s Division II final at Cerritos College.

Taylor was seventh in the state shot put final last year, after finishing third at the Southern Section Division II Finals. He was fourth in the section Division II shot put final as a sophomore.

Junior Allison Stokke, who won the CIF state girls’ pole vault title as a freshman but missed the postseason last year with a broken leg, qualified second with a clearance of 11-0.

Junior Jessica Robson qualified sixth in the long jump (17-1), but stumbled at the start of her 100-meter hurdles heat and just missed earning one of nine berths in the finals with a time of 16.06 seconds.

Junior Taylor Bryson finished second in one of three 1,600 heats and her time of 5:03.92 was ninth, earning her a berth in the final.

Senior Whitney Blue missed a berth in the 3,200 final by hundredths of a second, Sailors Coach Eric Tweit said. She finished the first of two heats in 11:13.4.

Sophomore Cassidy Gayner had the 11th-best time in the 300 hurdles (47.33), and did not advance, while Laura Clayton had the 12th-best mark in the triple jump (34-11), ending her season.

Tweit said the Sailors’ 1,600 relay of Tina Theriot, Bryson, Kayla Henrie and Gayner ran a season-best 4:07, though it did not qualify.
