Ken Barnes, the Newport Beach man who spent three days last week trapped in a damaged sailboat off the coast of Chile after brutal conditions cut short his attempt to circle the globe, is scheduled to return home this morning, family members said.
Barnes is scheduled to arrive at about 9 a.m. today at John Wayne Airport. His family will meet him at the gate courtesy of American Airlines, family representative Mike Mirabella said.
Barnes left Punta Arenas on Sunday, taking a plane to Santiago, then Dallas. He was expected to meet his twin daughters at the airport in Texas, then continue on to John Wayne Airport.
Barnes was rescued early Friday morning by the fishing trawler Polar Pesca 1, treated for his injuries, then taken to Punta Arenas in southern Chile, where he stood on land for the first time since his boat, the Privateer, left Long Beach in October.
