WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 90, Cal Baptist 87

RIVERSIDE — The Lions built a 50-39 halftime lead, then held on as the Lancers shot 54.3% from the field in the final 20 minutes of Vanguard’s Golden State Athletic Conference opener Tuesday at Cal Baptist.

Senior guard Jessica Richter had 29 points, making 10 of 17 field-goal tries and all six of her free throws to lead the winners (4-1, 1-0 in conference), who have now won 47 straight regular-season conference games.

Senior Lindsey Rinke and senior Melissa Cooke added 21 and 20 points, respectively, while Richter’s team-high nine rebounds helped the visitors compile a 44-38 rebounding edge.

Vanguard was 30 of 38 from the foul line, while Cal Baptist made nine of 12 free throws.

Nicole Davis had 32 points for the Lancers (5-1, 1-1).

RIVERSIDE — Senior guard Greg Gusiff came off the bench to lead the Lions with 14 points in their Golden State Athletic Conference road date with the Lancers Tuesday.

Gusiff made four three-pointers and collected five rebounds for the Lions (2-2, 0-1 in conference), who also received 13 points from starters Arvydas Vaitiekus, Andrew Wllis and Dennis Heenan.

Heenan had a team-high seven rebounds, while Ellis chipped in six assists.

All five Lancers starters scored in double figures to help the hosts improve to 4-0, 2-0.

Cal Baptist made 28 of 37 free throws, while Vanguard converted 16 of 21 from the foul line.
