Xtreme Gunners win tourney

On Sunday the Gold Coast Xtreme Gunners, a boys U12 team of the Gold Coast Xtreme Soccer Club, defeated the Lnysa Red Bulls on penalty kicks in a championship game of the FC Irvine Showcase tournament.

Thanks to a first half goal by Mark Hiserodt the Gunners enjoyed a 1-0 lead at halftime. Lnysa tied the game early in the second half, and regulation time end/Users/jaubele1/Pictued with the teams tied 1-1. After two scoreless overtime periods the Gunners netted two penalty kicks -- one each by Trevor Anderson and Ryan Gehris -- while Gunners goalkeeper Chris Brennan stopped each of the four penalty kicks he faced.

The performance during penalty kicks was a continuation of outstanding defensive play throughout the tournament. Overall in the four games the Gunners surrendered only two goals, their stifling defense led by fullbacks Trevor Anderson and Reed Slack, sweeper Joe Aubele, and stopper Alek Gilbreath.

The Gunners’ begin their regular season play in the Coast Soccer League on Sept. 6.
