THAT’S DEBATABLE:

The Pacifica condominium development has had residences on the market for a month, but only three people have moved in so far. It’s a sign of the times as the housing market staggers. It’s been a council priority to encourage more condos than apartments in Costa Mesa, but developers are now seeking permission for rental properties. If the market continues to suffer, would you be willing to be more open to rentals?

To meet the long-term goal of true improvement and revitalization of our city through the overlay zones, we need to continue to focus on for-sale housing.

Every project deserves to be looked at individually based on its location. Whether apartments or condos, my main concerns are the same: traffic, parking, open space, sustainability and amenities for the future residents. I always try to work with the developer to address these concerns. If the project improves Costa Mesa and fits well in the area proposed, then why should we penalize the developer for apartments instead of condos?

While these are challenging economic times for many people, Costa Mesa continues to be a desirable place for people to buy homes and raise a family. Costa Mesa has plenty of apartments, so our emphasis should continue to be on “for sale” housing. Pacifica continues to sell during this slow down and that shows there is still a demand.
