Three teams play on in playoffs

Edison Coach Dave White said he figured his Chargers would face Long Beach Millikan in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division football playoffs Friday night.

With a win, he thought Edison might face either Dana Hills or Orange Lutheran in the second round.

He was right on all counts, as the top-seeded Chargers indeed open against the Millikan Rams at 7 p.m. Friday night at Orange Coast College.

Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach were the other local teams to advance to the playoffs. The Barons go on the road to face Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks in the first round of the Pac-5 Division playoffs, while the Oilers travel to Anaheim to open the Southwest Division playoffs.

Here’s a look at the three first-round games:

CIF Southern Section Pac-5 Division Playoffs

Edison (10-0) vs. Long Beach Millikan (6-4), 7:30 p.m. Friday at OCC: Edison, the top-seeded Pac-5 team, won the Sunset League title outright for the first time since 1990 by defeating last-place Marina, 48-0, last Friday night. Senior quarterback Matt Viles missed the game due to a hyperextended left elbow but the Chargers, ranked No. 5 in the state by Calhisports.com, didn’t skip a beat.

Junior Davion Orphey continued his recent strong play with 124 yards and two touchdowns on just two carries. Seniors Wade Houston and Jonathan Cross also had touchdown runs, and the Chargers also had two defensive scores by Dylan Leener and Tyler Troya.

“I thought our kids did a great job of playing our game and jumping on them early,” said White, whose team led, 31-0, after the first quarter.

Viles practiced earlier this week and should be ready to go for the playoffs, White said. Edison will need him now against a Millikan team that finished fourth in the Moore League, including a 35-34 win over Long Beach Poly.

“That was a big win for them, obviously,” White said. “They’ve got good athletes and a lot of speed. They’ve just been inconsistent.”

Alden Darby is both the Rams’ leading passer (593 yards, seven touchdowns) and leading rusher (702 yards, 11 touchdowns).

The Chargers, beat seven of the 15 other teams in the Pac-5 Division playoffs during the regular season, are also healthy.

“Knock on wood,” White said. “That makes a big difference. We’ve got a real senior-dominated team and a lot of leadership.”

Fountain Valley (8-2) vs. Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks (8-2), 7:30 p.m. Friday at Notre Dame: The Barons finished in a three-way tie for second place in the Sunset League after last week’s 31-22 loss to Los Alamitos. However, after a coin flip, they got the league’s third playoff designation. They’ll travel to face Notre Dame, which earned the Serra League’s second-seed designation after losing to league champion Bishop Amat, 31-14, last week.

“We don’t know a ton about them,” Fountain Valley Coach John Shipp said of the Knights. “They run a spread offense, and their quarterback is good. They have good team speed and playmakers. In the Pac-5 Division, anybody you face is going to be real good.”

Kenneth Boggs (1,031 yards, 15 touchdowns) leads the Notre Dame ground attack, while Ryan Kasdorf (1,827 yards, 12 touchdowns, seven interceptions) is starting quarterback. His favorite target is Tyler Thomas (694 receiving yards, two touchdowns).

Senior Kyle Middlebrooks had three total touchdowns for Fountain Valley in the loss to Los Al, two rushing and one on a punt return. He had 173 rushing yards.

Fountain Valley comes into the playoffs losers of two straight after starting the season 8-0.

“Of course you’re always bothered by losing,” Shipp said. “You have to give credit to the two football teams we played against [Edison and Los Alamitos]. I always use the term ‘character’ with our kids, and persevering through adverse times. We were penalty-riddled last week, but it was a good football game up until the end.”

Fountain Valley will be trying to win its first CIF playoff game in Shipp’s six-year tenure. They also advanced to the playoffs in 2004 and last year, when they fell to Orange Lutheran, 28-0, in the opening round.

With a win, the Barons would play either No. 2-seeded Mission Viejo or Long Beach Wilson in the quarterfinals Nov. 27.

CIF Southern Section Southwest Division Playoffs

Huntington Beach (6-4) at Anaheim (5-5), 7 p.m. Friday at Glover Stadium: The Oilers clinched third place in league and a playoff berth by topping Woodbridge, 38-24, in their Sea View League finale last week.

They will play at Anaheim, which finished in a three-way tie for first in the Orange League with Santa Ana Valley and Savanna

The Colonists won the coin flip to earn the league’s top playoff designation.

“They have good size, a running back that runs hard and they’re a physical team,” Oilers Coach Eric Lo said. “We’re just very excited. We’ve made the playoffs two years in a row and that hasn’t happened a lot at Huntington.”

Senior receiver Kaller Roemer continued a strong season with four catches for 171 yards and a touchdown against Woodbridge. Senior quarterback Sean Guite also threw touchdown passes to Cameron Pizzica and Shawn LeMaster, and senior Jack Dilbeck (157 yards and a touchdown) had a strong game at tailback.

The first half ended in a 17-17 tie but Huntington Beach turned up the intensity.

“In the second half we were able to stop them consistently,” Lo said.

Should Huntington Beach win, it’d face either No. 2-seeded Tustin or Valencia of Placentia in a Nov. 27 quarterfinal.

Other local teams wrapped up their seasons in Week 10:

Ocean View 61, Saddleback 36: Sophomore tailback Timmy Robinson had 153 rushing yards and three touchdowns as the Seahawks finished their season on a good note.

Quarterback Nolan Tippy threw for 166 yards and four first-half touchdowns for Ocean View (4-6, 1-4), which finished fourth in the Golden West League. Ocean View’s Travis Sparks-Jackson had a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Brethren Christian 55, Crean Lutheran South 0: Senior Ryan Randle broke the school record for rushing yards as the Warriors won their final Academy League game of the season.

Brethren Christian (5-5), which finished third in the league, was not selected for an at-large berth into the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Randle rushed for 181 yards Friday night to give him 1,489 yards this season. The previous record of 1,485 yards was set in 1982.

Los Amigos 14, Bolsa Grande 6: The Lobos won the battle of winless teams as Daniel Hernandez threw two touchdown passes, one each to Jose Perez and Alex Lopez.

Freshman Jerry Saldivar rushed for 120 yards for Los Amigos.
