High School Roundup: Andrew Mits goes distance, earns win for Estancia baseball in CIF opener

Andrew Mits threw a complete game, allowing no earned runs as the Estancia High School baseball team beat Tarbut V’Torah 7-1 in a CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoff opener Thursday at home.
Mits allowed just one hit, improving his record to 8-4 on the mound. He struck out nine for Estancia (24-5).
Jack Moyer and Myles Moyer were each two for three with two runs scored for the Eagles. James De La O was two for four with a run batted in.
No. 2-seeded Estancia hosts Fontana AB Miller in the second round Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Whittier La Serna 2, Huntington Beach 1 (11 innings): The Oilers managed just four hits as a team in the extra-innings affair on Thursday in a CIF Southern Section Division 1 first-round game at Huntington Beach High School.
Grace Grundstrom went two for four with a double and a run batted in. Jaylene Duarte had a hit and a run scored for Huntington Beach (21-8), which was the Surf League champion.
Zoe Prystajko threw a complete game, allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits and three walks. She struck out 15 batters in the tough-luck loss.
San Jacinto Valley 13, Costa Mesa 2: The Mustangs finished their season with an overall record of 13-8 following Thursday’s loss in the opening round of the Division 6 playoffs on the road.
Costa Mesa placed second in the Orange Coast League behind Calvary Chapel this season.
La Verne Lutheran 20, Estancia 10: Ashley Roca had three hits, four runs batted in and three runs scored to lead the host Trojans on Thursday in the first round of the Division 7 playoffs.
Estancia (8-14) was the third-place team in the Orange Coast League this season.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Corona del Mar 17, Santa Clarita West Ranch 8: Abby Grace and Frankie Garcia each scored four goals for the Sea Kings in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs Thursday on the road.
Katie Sullivan and Belle Grace each added three goals for No. 2-seeded CdM (13-5).
The Sea Kings play at Canyon in a quarterfinal match Saturday at 10 a.m. The game is a rematch of last year’s Division 2 final, won by CdM.
Newport Harbor 17, West Hills Chaminade 2: The Sailors earned an easy win Thursday in the first round of the Division 2 playoffs on the road.
Rowdy Farmer had seven goals and two assists for No. 3-seeded Newport Harbor (12-9). Caroline Close and Olivia Gritzmacher each recorded a hat-trick, and Casey Sharbrough added two goals and two assists.
The Sailors play at San Juan Hills in a Division 2 quarterfinal match Saturday.
SWIMMING
Costa Mesa High junior Maddie Stein qualified for the championship finals in the 100-yard backstroke on Thursday in the CIF Southern Section Division 3 preliminaries at Marguerite Aquatics Center in Mission Viejo.
Stein touched in 1 minute, 0.92 seconds to qualify eighth for the Mustangs.
The Division 3 finals are Saturday at 2 p.m.
