Legendary baseball scout Epy Guerrero dies at 71

Legrendary baseball scout Epy Guerrero, 71, died Thursday in the Dominican Republic, the Toronto Blue Jays announced.

The Blue Jays held a moment of silence before Thursday night’s game against Baltimore in memory of Guerrero.

Guerrero signed outfielder Cesar Cedeno for Houston in the 1970s before becoming a scout for Toronto. He scouted and recommended the signings of Tony Fernandez, Alfredo Griffin, George Bell and Carlos Delgado.

Manny Acta, who managed the Cleveland Indians and Washington Nationals, issued the following statement:

“Very sad day for baseball, specially in the DR. Epy Guerrero was more than just a great scout, he was also an excellent human being and visionary. He was one of the first ones to implement the current baseball academies system, that has helped produce so many great MLB players from the DR.”

Guerrero was inducted into the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
