Samsung and 3-D company RealD announced a joint venture Tuesday to develop a new display panel that they say will make images on 3-D TVs sharper.
The technology, which works with the kind of 3D glasses you get at the movie theater, is radically different from that of current glasses packaged with 3-D TVs. Existing 3-D TV glasses are much more expensive and require batteries to generate images.
[For the record, 10:15 a.m.: An earlier version of this post said the companies developed new 3-D glasses. The glasses are not new. The television’s display is new.]
Current 3-D TV displays ‘cut resolution in half or diminish brightness,’ the companies said in a statement.
‘RealD is focused on delivering a premium 3-D experience on screens of all sizes, from motion picture theaters to consumer electronics, and we look forward to working with Samsung LCD to develop this new 3-D display technology,’ said Bob Mayson, president of consumer electronics at Beverly Hills-based RealD.
The technology will be showcased this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
