EDUCATION : Mayfair Students Walk Out of Class to Support Teachers : School Finances
- Share via
About 250 students from Mayfair High School walked out of class last Thursday to show their support for teachers in contract negotiations with the Bellflower Unified School District. The teachers did not sanction the walkout, which lasted from 11:15 a.m. until about noon.
The protesting students gathered in front of the school on Woodruff Avenue in Lakewood and remained peaceful throughout the demonstration. They finally returned to their classes after signing a petition that simply stated: “We support the teachers.”
About half a dozen students received suspensions of up to five days for participating in the walkout.
Bellflower district teachers have been working without a contract this school year. Negotiations between the district and the teacher union are continuing.
