COUNTYWIDE : Trustees Greet New College Chancellor

Ventura County Community College District trustees welcomed incoming Chancellor Thomas Lakin at a reception Tuesday night, saying his arrival marks a new era of reform for the problem-riddled district.

“Tonight we are ushering in a new era of professionalism, “ said Board President Timothy Hirschberg. “It’s a chance for us to begin the college district again.”

Lakin, the former president of Los Angeles Southwest College, replaces Barbara Derryberry, who retired Monday.

Lakin, described as a tough-minded visionary, is credited with reviving the Los Angeles community college.

The chancellor told the board that he was looking forward to his new job.

“Together, I am confident that we will move forward into the 21st Century with an innovative spirit, restored public confidence, and a reputation for providing our students with nothing less than the best.”

He later said: “It’s like running a marathon. It’s one step at a time. I’m here for the long run.”

Lakin was selected for the $112,500-a-year position in April after a six-month search.

He takes the reins of the district at a turbulent time. Two weeks ago, Trustee James T. (Tom) Ely and his wife, Ingrid, were convicted of bilking the district of $15,000.

Recently, Moorpark College President Stanley L. Bowers was demoted for approving questionable financial transactions, including $3,100 in travel expenses for Ingrid Ely. And Vice Chancellor Tom Kimberling resigned amid charges of mismanagement and wife-beating.
