Ed Eyestone became the first American since 1982 to win the 10-kilometer Peachtree Road Race at Atlanta.
Eyestone’s time of 28:34 was 38 seconds off the course record.
The top female finisher was Dorthe Rasmussen of Denmark, whose time was 32:42. She won by three seconds, beating Katerina Khramenkova of the Soviet Union after taking the lead with about a quarter-mile to go.
“I had a good track workout last week. I thought I could come here and surprise a lot of people,” said Eyestone of Bountiful, Utah.
Top-seeded William Musyoki of Kenya dropped back early and failed to finish.
Craig Blanchette of Springfield, Ore., won the men’s wheelchair division in a record 20:16. The women’s wheelchair winner was Jean Driscoll of Champaign, Ill., who finished in 23:46.
