Opera Supertitles

Despite Martin Bernheimer’s hostility to supertitles as expressed in his opera review (“A Sensitive ‘Turn of the Screw,’ ” Calendar, June 24), there are many of us who want and depend on them, even when the opera is sung in English.
I attended the June 25 performance and was frustrated beyond measure. Because of excellent program notes and the pre-curtain lecture, I was able to follow the story line but missed the nuances that would come if I could have understood the words. Operatic singing does not lend itself to verbal comprehension.
Supertitles help all operatic productions.
