Welch Drama Fails to Teach Youngsters the Right Lessons

I couldn’t help but notice all the newsprint devoted to the Harry Welch drama being played out in The Times. Whatever happened to high school sports being extracurricular activities?

I went to Palmdale High with the first graduating class of 1959. No, we didn’t have leather football helmets, but the sports were there for the kids to have fun and to teach the kids what teamwork and sportsmanship could accomplish. The coach, Jack Frost, set the example. A positive example.

It seems to me all this controversy over Canyon High’s Coach Welch is just another example of our somewhat jaded values. What does this tell the kids? You can cheat and it’s OK if you don’t get caught? And if you are caught, just scream loud enough and not much will happen to you?

Another great set of values taught.

Come on, let’s get real. The coach and all the egotistical parents need to get their act together and stop crying.
