American backstrokers Barbara Bedford and William Schwenk won swimming gold medals in the World University Games at Sheffield, England, with Bedford setting a Games 100-meter record of 1:02.08.

Kristina Stinson of the United States finished second to Bedford in 1:03.70, and the bronze went to Australia’s Niecia Freeman, who finished in 1:04.47.

Canada’s Kevin Draxinger chased but never got within a yard of Schwenk, who finished with a personal best time of 2:00.38 in the 200-meter race.

Frenchman Stephan Caron completed a double freestyle victory by adding the 100-meter gold medal to his 200-meter victory, and Canadian Patricia Noall collected a gold medal and a bronze medal to go with the silver and two bronzes she had won at the Games.

Bedford and Schwenk lifted the U.S. gold medal total at the Games to four--all in the pool.
