Dow Chemical Co.: The Midland, Mich., chemical, plastics and consumer products company reported that second-quarter profit plunged 36% to $233 million. Sales were flat at $4.8 billion. The company said lower demand for oil-based products required it to lower prices during the quarter; at the same time, manufacturing costs rose 6%.
