From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A prosecutor read a roll call of 87 names as he opened his case in the arson-mass murder trial of the man who set fire to the Happy Land social club in the Bronx in 1990. Julio Gonzalez’ court-appointed attorney admitted that his client set the fire, but he said that Gonzalez was not responsible because he was insane. Gonzalez, 37, a Cuban refugee, was charged with 174 counts of murder--two counts for each victim on charges of depraved indifference and felony murder.
